Can you do a day trip to Hydra from Piraeus?
Short answer: Yes. It is one of the most rewarding island day trips from Piraeus, if you take an early ferry and come back on a sensible evening boat rather than the literal last one. Crossings are typically 1 h 10 to 1 h 30, fares roughly €30–45 one way, and there are daily sailings year-round. Hydra has no cars, no scooters and no airport, so the day is about the harbour town, walking and water taxis to coves. If you miss the last return, you sleep there.
Hydra is not a checklist island. Its pleasure is the absence of traffic, the amphitheatre of stone houses around the harbour, and the swim you reach by water taxi or a short cliff path. Plan for that, not for covering distance.
Sailing times, fares and water-taxi availability change. Confirm the last return and the sea forecast on the day.
Is it realistic?
With three conditions:
- You catch a morning ferry. An arrival around 09:00–10:00 gives you a proper day; an arrival at midday makes it a lunch stop.
- You leave on the late-afternoon/early-evening useful boat, not the last possible one. Weather can cancel the final sailing.
- You treat the day as harbour-plus-water, not a hike across the island plus three villages plus a museum.
Hydra is in the Saronic Gulf, more sheltered than the Cyclades, but the meltemi can still make the crossing uncomfortable and delay high-speeds.
Timetable and cost (indicative)
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| First useful sailing from Piraeus | ~08:00 |
| Fastest crossing | ~1 h 10 |
| Average crossing | ~1 h 30 |
| One-way fare | ~€30–45 |
| Common operators | Alpha Lines, Magic Sea Ferries and other Saronic specialists |
| Last useful return | Late afternoon to early evening; some summer schedules run around 19:00–19:30. Confirm your date |
Check the exact date: winter schedules are thinner, and the "last boat" can move earlier in shoulder season.
A realistic Hydra day
Best version:
- 07:00–07:30: arrive at Piraeus, board.
- 08:00: ferry departs.
- 09:15–09:30: arrive Hydra, walk the harbour, coffee.
- 10:00–11:30: explore the lanes, churches and viewpoints; book a water taxi if you want a cove.
- 12:00–13:30: lunch in the shade.
- 14:00–16:00: swim at Spilia/Avlaki or a water-taxi cove.
- 17:30: back at the harbour, ice cream, board.
- Late afternoon or early evening: return ferry (confirm the exact last sailing).
- 20:30–21:30: back in Piraeus or Athens.
Half-day fallback: morning boat, harbour and one nearby swim, early return. Better than a late start with no plan.
What not to do:
- Plan a long hike and a water-taxi swim and a late lunch.
- Take the last boat "because there will be another".
- Schedule an Athens museum or a flight after the return.
What Hydra is like
- No cars. Luggage is carried, paths are stepped, and water taxis are the local transport to coves.
- The harbour is the centre. Tavernas, cafés and shops ring the bay; the lanes rise steeply behind.
- Water taxis run from the harbour to Spilia, Avlaki, Kamini and further coves. Agree the price and pickup time before you leave the dock.
- Spilia is the closest swim, a short walk around the headland; Avlaki is a little further and often quieter.
- Wear proper shoes. Cobbles and stepped paths are hard on sandals.
- Carry a daypack. Rolling suitcases are a bad idea on Hydra.
- Swimming is cove-based, not a long sandy beach. That is the charm.
- Sunset from the harbour is the classic ending, but do not let it cost you the ferry.
Weather and the return risk
- The meltemi builds through the day. The return crossing is often rougher than the outbound.
- High-speeds may be cancelled or delayed; conventional ferries are more resilient.
- If the last useful boat is cancelled, you stay. Hydra has hotels and guesthouses, but everyone discovers the shortage at the same time.
- Have a backup plan: a bookable hotel, a card that works, and a phone charger.
- Do not rely on a water taxi to get you back to the ferry pier at the last minute; they stop earlier than the ferries.
- Check the forecast the evening before. If strong northerlies are due, choose another day or another island.
Booking and money
- Book the return in advance in July–August, especially for the popular morning/evening pair.
- A flexible fare is worth it if a flight or fixed booking follows the trip.
- Carry cash for water taxis, small tavernas and tips; cards are widely accepted but not universal.
- Water taxis add €10–20+ per person depending on the cove; agree before boarding.
- Organised cruises can be cheaper and simpler, but they usually give you less time ashore and a fixed route. DIY gives you control; take it only if you are comfortable with the return risk.
- Travel light. A daypack is the right luggage.
Common mistakes
- Arriving with a rolling suitcase. Hydra is steps and cobbles.
- Leaving Piraeus without a defined return boat. "We'll see" is how people end up paying for a Hydra hotel.
- Starting at 11:00 and expecting a full day.
- Assuming the last ferry will wait. It will not.
- Forgetting that water taxis stop earlier than ferries.
- Booking a dinner in Athens for the same evening. Leave the evening open.
- Underestimating the heat on the stepped lanes. Water, hat, shade.
FAQ
Are there cars on Hydra?
No. The island is car-free. Transport is on foot, by boat or by donkey for luggage. Bring only what you can carry.
What is the last ferry back from Hydra?
It varies by operator and date; some summer schedules have a last return around 19:00–19:30, while others leave earlier. Confirm the exact date and treat the last boat as a fallback, not the plan.
Is Hydra suitable for limited mobility?
Partly. The harbour front is manageable, but the lanes are steep and stepped, and coves may require uneven paths or a water taxi. Plan around the harbour and a single accessible cove.
What happens if the return ferry is cancelled?
You may need to stay overnight. Contact the operator immediately, book accommodation early, and do not wait for the crowd to discover the same problem. Hydra has rooms, but not unlimited ones in August.
